The second-seeded Filipina survived spirited rallies from the teenage Australian after American Alycia Parks withdrew with a shoulder injury, booking a round-of-16 meeting with Tereza Valentova.
HONG KONG — Second-seeded Alex Eala overcame an abrupt pre-match opponent change and resisted two spirited fightbacks from Australian lucky loser Emerson Jones, earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory on Tuesday night to reach the round of 16 at the Hong Kong Tennis Open.
The 21-year-old Filipina was originally slated to open her campaign against American Alycia Parks on Center Court at Victoria Park. Parks withdrew shortly before the contest due to a right shoulder injury, clearing the way for Jones. The 18-year-old Australian, ranked 132nd in the world, had lost her final qualifying round match on Sunday against Alexandra Shubladze before gaining entry into the main draw.
The sudden adjustment tested Eala from the outset. "I'm definitely not used to my opponent changing that late," Eala said after the match. "It was just a new experience. I guess that's the tour, you kind of have to be ready for anything."
Eala seized early momentum by attacking aggressively from the baseline, establishing a commanding 4-0 cushion. Jones settled into the contest once she found her rhythm, tracking down heavy groundstrokes and capitalizing on fluctuating depth from Eala. The Australian broke Eala's serve three times across the opening frame, pulling within 4-3 and remaining within striking distance at 5-4.
Serving for the set in the tenth game, Eala fell behind 15-40 after several unforced errors. Faced with double break point, the Filipina elevated her play. Eala produced four consecutive disciplined points, forcing Jones into baseline errors to close out the 48-minute opening set.
The second set followed a similar trajectory. Eala seized control with crisp crosscourt combinations, earning two service breaks. The second break came courtesy of a costly double fault from Jones, giving Eala a seemingly decisive 5-1 lead.
Jones refused to surrender. When Eala served for the match at 5-1, consecutive double faults and mistimed groundstrokes handed the Australian a break of serve. Jones followed with a confident service hold, narrowing the deficit to 5-3 and placing pressure back on the second seed.
Given a second chance to serve out the match, Eala stabilized her delivery. She built a 40-15 advantage to earn two match points. Jones saved the first when Eala netted a forehand, but the Australian sent her subsequent return wide on the second match point, concluding the battle after one hour and 35 minutes.
Eala praised her teenage opponent while reflecting on the hard-fought result. "Super happy to be here in Hong Kong, super happy with the performance," Eala said. "It was a really good match. Emerson is such a sweetheart off the court and such a great player on the court, so looking forward to many more matches together in the future."
A passionate contingent of Filipino supporters provided vocal energy throughout the evening at Victoria Park. Eala highlighted her deep personal history with the tournament and the local community.
"I've been competing here ever since I was very young. I've been here many, many times," Eala explained. "There's a huge Filipino community, and the Hong Kong community has been very hospitable towards me, my family, my team, and all of the players. Besides it being geographically very close to home, it feels very familiar."
The victory offered an encouraging start to Eala's concluding tournament of 2026. She ascended to a career-best world ranking of No. 17 on Monday after reaching the quarterfinals at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, accumulating 2,289 ranking points. Her breakout campaign also included a historic first WTA singles title in Washington, where she defeated Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula, alongside a fourth-round showing at Wimbledon.
Eala advances to face Czech rising star Tereza Valentova in the round of 16. Valentova advanced earlier on Court 2 by defeating Japanese qualifier Himeno Sakatsume 6-3, 7-5. Eala has dropped both of their previous professional encounters, which both took place in 2025, and will seek her first career victory against the Czech.
In other opening-round action at Victoria Park, top-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea survived a strenuous three-set encounter against Maria Timofeeva, prevailing 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 7-5 to secure her place in the tournament's final 16.
