Freddie Jackson Dies at 70: R&B Legend Behind 10 Chart-Toppers

Freddie Jackson, the two-time Grammy-nominated singer whose classic ballads yielded 10 Billboard R&B No. 1 singles during the quiet storm era, has died at 70.

Freddie Jackson died on October 5, 2026, at age 70, his family announced on social media on October 6. The two-time Grammy nominee achieved 10 No. 1 R&B singles, including "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)" and "You Are My Lady." No cause of death was announced.

Jackson scored 10 Billboard No. 1 R&B singles and 18 Top 10 tracks between 1985 and 1999.

Jackson honed his delivery as a child gospel singer at White Rock Baptist Church in Harlem before touring as a backup vocalist for Melba Moore. In 1985, his debut solo album, Rock Me Tonight, transformed him into an instant sensation.

The title track spent six weeks atop the Billboard Black Singles chart, while the follow-up ballad "You Are My Lady" reached No. 1 on R&B radio and crossed over to No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jackson earned two Grammy nominations in 1986, including Best New Artist and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male.

Jackson dominated urban contemporary formats through the late 1980s, releasing back-to-back chart-topping tracks such as "Tasty Love," "Have You Ever Loved Somebody," "Jam Tonight," and "Nice 'N' Slow." In 1990, his hit "Do Me Again" secured his status as one of the decade's premier balladeers.

Freddie was more than a legendary voice," his family said in an official statement released on October 6, 2026. "He was a kind, generous soul who loved his fans, his family, his friends, and his music with everything he had. For decades he gave us the songs that became the soundtrack to our love stories."
