The moment came as Energy Secretary Chris Wright was discussing the administration’s industrial policy and a new partnership involving Mesabi Metallics. While Wright spoke, Trump appeared to lower his head and keep his eyes closed for several moments.
Mesabi chairman Rewant Ruia also spoke during the event and expressed enthusiasm about the planned project. Trump appeared to look in Ruia’s direction at times, although his eyes continued to close and reopen while the presentation continued.
The president also appeared subdued while answering questions from reporters afterward. His responses were relatively brief and quiet.
The episode drew attention because Trump has previously been filmed appearing to close his eyes during other public events, including meetings and ceremonies. However, appearing to close one’s eyes or briefly nodding off during a public appearance does not by itself establish a medical condition or explain why the person did so.
