Speaking at the 2026 TIME100 Next Gala, the British actor credited production support and positive fan excitement ahead of the fantasy adaptation's December 25 debut on HBO and Max.
British actor Paapa Essiedu has affirmed that he will not step down from portraying Severus Snape in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter television series, rejecting months of intense online hostility and demands that he abandon the production.
Speaking at the TIME100 Next Gala in New York on October 29, the 36-year-old performer stated that his focus centers on craft rather than social agitation. Essiedu, recognized for his acclaimed, Emmy-nominated turn in the television drama I May Destroy You, took on the iconic role knowing the decision would prompt widespread debate across a global audience.
Stepping into the shoes of the late Alan Rickman, who famously defined Hogwarts' enigmatic Potions master across all eight blockbuster films, Essiedu evaluated the scope of public scrutiny before accepting the commitment.
"The whole team has been so supportive of me," Essiedu told Variety on the gala carpet. "Obviously, my priority is the work. I wouldn't take this job on [otherwise], but I walk into it with open eyes. I understand the broad spectrum of what the reaction to what we're doing means, and I take that mantle on with an open and full heart."
The actor noted that alongside online hostility, he has encountered meaningful encouragement from enthusiastic readers and viewers. Acknowledging that observers retain every right to form personal judgments, Essiedu described playing Snape as a privilege and an honor, stating his ambition is to bring psychological nuance, emotional depth and structural complexity to the flawed antihero.

HBO confirmed Essiedu's casting in April 2025, triggering immediate friction among vocal purists dissatisfied with selecting a Black performer for a persona J.K. Rowling originally penned as pale and sallow. That friction worsened considerably in March 2026, when network publicists unveiled promotional imagery showing Essiedu styled with dreadlocks and dark leather attire.
The digital response quickly deteriorated from aesthetic disagreements into targeted harassment and racist death threats sent directly to the actor, accompanied by recurring public calls for his immediate resignation. In response to the escalating danger and threats of physical violence, HBO leadership intervened to protect the filming environment.
During television industry presentations in March 2026, HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that network executives had assembled a serious security team specifically to safeguard Essiedu and the broader production crew. Bloys noted that studio leadership anticipated strong fan passions and polarized discussions surrounding reinterpreted characters.
Beyond debates regarding literal fidelity to page descriptions, the casting choice generated substantial critical discussion regarding its narrative ramifications within the wizarding universe. In the original storyline, Snape endures chronic teenage bullying at the hands of Harry's father James Potter and his Gryffindor peers, an adversarial dynamic that critics noted could take on distinct racial connotations on screen. Analysts also highlighted that Snape's historical affiliation with Lord Voldemort and the blood-purist Death Eaters introduces complex new social dynamics into the franchise's depiction of institutional prejudice.
Essiedu indicated that after months of filming and public chatter, the focus should shift toward the final creative product. "I'm really proud of what I've seen so far," Essiedu said. "There are so many people who worked so hard on this project, and who it means so much to. It's been a long time coming. It's been a long time that people have been saying a lot of things, and now's the time for people to engage with what we made."
The debut season, adapting the 1997 novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, reintroduces Snape as the suspicious, demanding Potions instructor who immediately clashes with the newly enrolled boy wizard. Harry's early investigations lead him to suspect that the stern professor is actively plotting to steal the legendary stone for Voldemort, establishing the dramatic friction that anchors the inaugural school year at Hogwarts.
The multi-season television adaptation will debut its opening episode on December 25, 2026, streaming across Max alongside its linear HBO broadcast. Young lead Dominic McLaughlin headlines the production as Harry Potter, joined by Arabella Stanton playing Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The Hogwarts faculty features veteran actors John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, with Lox Pratt portraying classmate Draco Malfoy.
